Favorite Colors

Today we wore our favorite color today and did lots of fun color activities.  We even graphed our favorite color.  Here’s a look at the results. We are learning so much about colors!

MMM… M & M’s

Today we had a fun day with M & M’s.  First each kid got an individual bag of M & M’s.  We counted how many they had in their bag. Then we sorted them by color. Next we graphed our M & M’s by color.   We then had to add the different colors together.  When we were done we got to eat our M & M’s. What fun we had! After we were done we graphed all of our class’s results to see which M & M we had the least of and the greatest of in the whole class.

Our First Day of School

Today was such a busy day! We kept very busy all day long. We read lots of fun stories and learned a lot about each other! Read "Don't Spit on Your Shoes" a funny story about Arnie's first day of school. I hope ours isn't so crazy! We also worked on becoming friends. We were so busy that by the end of the day we couldn't wait to get home! Boy were we tired. I can't wait to do it all again tommorow though.

Welcome to First Grade

Welcome to my class. I am so excited for this year! I just know we will have fun! We will start off this week with a ton of fun color activities. Each day we will work hard to get to know each other and our classroom. I can't wait to get to know each of you! Be sure to share this blog info with your family and friends near and far!

Space Friday

This afternoon we learned about Earth’s Moon.
We learned about the phases of the Moon. We even made a flipbook to illustrate the changes the Moon has during it’s cycle.  We loved using a white crayon to write on black paper! It was a busy day learning about the Moon and the Earth!

  

Gumball Math

Next week we will begin GUMBALL MATH!   It is a series of timed math tests that will help your child learn their addition and subtraction facts.  When they pass a test they will earn a gumball.

Space Week 1

Centers this week seemed pretty easy for most of us. We practiced adding and subtracting using a number line by playing Race to the Moon and Back.

We also worked on ten more, ten less, one more, and one less using a hundred chart as needed.We played Sound it Out Mission. We read cards and if we read the card correctly we flipped a coin to move on the game board. We then had to write the word down under short vowel or long vowel words. This week we worked more with putting sentences in order. We will continue to do this so we are used to sentence structure as well as remembering capital letters and punctuation marks.

 

We also played Planet Vowel Race where we rolled a die and used a chart to decide which vowel we could use. We had to spell out the names of the planets correctly.  We also sorted addition problems according to the sum.

Bunny Day!

What a fun and busy day we had today. We loved having our bunnies near us. They helped us take our spelling and math test.

We also made cute bunny headbands to wear.  We also compared different bunnies using a Venn Diagram. This made us think hard about similarities and differences.   The most fun of the day though had to be our jumping contest. We all jumped as far as we could. We measured the length and recorded!  Walter and Colton were the top jumpers!! Congratulations!

Eggs!

Centers this week were a lot of fun because we used a lot of fun eggs. At one center we had letters scrambled up in an egg and we had to figure out what the word was. At another center we had pictures hidden in eggs and we had to sort the word by the vowel sound and sound spell it out.  Another center has us coin the coins in eggs.   We also worked on place value, comparing numbers using more than and less than symbols, types of words (nouns, verbs, and adjectives), and unscrambling sentences.  At listening center we listened to There Was an Old Lady Who Swallowed a Chick by Lucille Colandro.  This is yet another version of the classic tale. After listening to it we sequenced the story and wrote the ending to it.

Rabbits and Circular Stories

This week was a review week for reading.  We read more of our circular stories and even looked at some illustrated ones online. We loved reading the stories online.  Click on the link to read them at home.

After we looked at these we started writing our own stories. To help us out we used a graphic organizer to figure out how our story would start and end up in the same place. Then we did a rough draft. Together with Miss Voge, we edited the stories then wrote a final copy. We are so very proud of our stories and we can’t wait to share them!

This week we also learned about rabbits. There is so much to learn.  Our centers this week had a rabbit theme. We worked on our addition facts, missing addends, even and odd numbers, unscrambling real sentences about rabbits, we even listened to some of our favorite circular stories.

On Friday we got to do Long Vowel centers. We worked in small groups and practiced our skills. These centers were very challenging and it was fun to work in different groups. it made the day go so fast! What a busy week it was!

Our Lucky Day!

Since we won’t be at school on St. Patrick’s Day today was “Our Lucky Day”.  Our first surprise was that we only had to write the words on our spelling test.  What a treat that was.  Then we had an animal assembly.  Tanganyika came out and brought some of their animals.  The kids had a lot of fun. We saw snakes, ferrets, an armadillo, a lizard, a gecko, and a hedgehog.

When we got back to the room we make our lucky headbands.  By then it was lunch time!! What a fast morning!

After lunch we did our Lucky math. We joined an online program to answer the questions, “Are there more leaf clovers than any other marshmallow type in a box of Lucky Charms.?” We each got a scoop of Lucky Charms and started sorting. When we were done we graphed our results and then did tally marks to show how many each kid had.  We then combine each students’ results into a class record.

Our class had 608 marshmallows. We had 78 rainbows, 47 pink hearts, 70 shooting stars, 38 red balloons, 75 purple horseshoes, 107 four-leaf clovers, 135 pots of gold and 58 blue moons.  Sadly we had more pots of gold than four- leaf clovers.  Once we were done we then listed our tally marks on a chart for our entire hall (5 classes).

Our hall had 2,605 marshmallows.  We had 410 rainbows, 205 pink hearts, 290 shooting stars, 217 red balloons, 271 purple horseshoes, 485 four-leaf clovers, 483 pots of gold, and 245 blue balloons.  The four-leaf clovers won!! Whew! We added our results to this site with 500 other classrooms.   The results will soon be in until next week so we will have to check back after spring break to see if four-leaf clover is the most for all the classes in the country!! Surprisingly our fun day was still not over!! We then had one more surprise: ice cream bars. After our snack we had recess then P.E.  Boy was it a fun day and lucky day!
